Family thank neighbours for help during Taunton garden fire

A FAMILY has thanked quick-thinking neighbours who put their lives on the line to help stop a raging fire reaching their house.

Vicki Moore, 28 and her husband Nick, 43, were watching television at their home in Cheddon Road, Taunton, on Friday (February 22) night when they heard two explosions.

Mr Moore investigated outside and when he opened the back door he was greeted with flames heading towards the house.

Mrs Moore said: ?My husband said ?get everybody out? as he tried to put the fire out.

?Three neighbours nearby helped him and it is just a massive thank you to them for ringing the fire service and looking after my husband.

?It was all a bit of a scare.?

Mrs Moore and her three children, Kaden, nine, Leon, eight, and Bethany, five, left through the front of the house to safety.

As Mr Moore tackled the flames at the back of the property he almost collapsed due to smoke inhalation but one of the neighbours arrived just in time to pull him away before taking over the hosepipe to tackle the flames.

Mr Moore was treated by ambulance crews and the family, who have lived at the house since 2008, say they are in the process of clearing up all the rubble the fire has left in their garden.

A Devon and Somerset Fire spokesman said they sent one fire engine and four firefighters to the scene and believe the fire started in a pile of rubbish at the back of the two-storey property.

Is community spirit still alive? Would you help your neighbours out? Let us know.

Comic Books and Cookies: Spotlight on Fatherhood by Ryan K ...

Fatherhood is a rare creature. It?s a comic that seamlessly combines a pair of genres that wouldn?t usually go together, but Ryan K Lindsay, the writer/mastermind behind this one-shot, has done it seamlessly. Putting together a realistic family drama with a sudden twist into the depths of noir, Fatherhood is an emotional journey through what it feels like to be a father, or hell, to be a parent at all- and doing whatever it takes to make your child happy.
Fatherhood follows the story of a nameless, divorc?e Dad who only sees his beloved young daughter every once in a while. One morning, while sitting on his porch, he reads the mail and discovers there?s a sale on a Perky Pat doll, something that he believes would bring a smile to his daughter?s face. Tearing out of his house, trench coat and trilby to hand, he joins the queue of anxious women waiting outside the local toy store to buy up the doll. When the store opens, all hell breaks loose, and the women fight tooth and nail to get their hands on Perky Pat, leaving Dad with nothing. Dejected, he goes back to his car, puts on his hat and coat, and decides to get a doll, by any means necessary? I am by no means a parent. This fact is pretty well-known, but I couldn?t help but sympathise with the father in this book. By the time I?d finished Fatherhood I had a shiver down my spine, a prickling of tears in my eyes and the overwhelming desire to phone my Dad and tell him how thankful I was for everything he?d ever done for me. ?Fatherhood is an incredibly powerful, emotional comic-book, and is well worth a read. No matter your age or who you are, you?ll find something here to love. The artwork is beautifully simplistic, and matches the exact tone of the story, and Daniel Schneider does an amazing job on capturing facial expressions and constructing backgrounds. Not only that, but Paulina Ganucheau?s colours are well and truly sublime, fitting the change in tone and mood brilliantly in the story. Shifting from bright to dark colours infrequently, Ganucheau shows real promise and adapts the story beautifully.

I recently had the chance to speak to Ryan about Fatherhood (both the series and his experiences) creating ?comic books and his future work?

A: What was the influence behind writing Fatherhood? R: I?ll be really honest and give up the dirty little secret. I stumbled across this whole story by accident. I was being an idiot on twitter ? not usually where great writing is spawned ? and I was playing a little hashtag game all by myself. I was making up new noir genres, I did a stack; #beardnoir, #funoir, #dognoir, #beachnoir, #winenoir, and then out popped #fatherhoodnoir. It stewed for a few days but then, after discussing possible plots for a short film with my brother, I got pretty much the whole tale in one go. So, the secret to success was actually procrastinating on social media. Usually it?s quite the opposite.

A: You mention in the epilogue that you have children yourself. Are the events of Fatherhood based on your experiences as a father?

R: Ha, thankfully not. I?ve come close a few times to losing my mind. My son wasn?t a great sleeper for about a year and a half so I?d be up every two hours rocking him back down or pacing the house with him. In those times, I?d concoct all sorts of scenarios and stories to keep my mind busy. I went on all sorts of crazy adventures but nothing quite as sad as this. Yet, ultimately, for me, FATHERHOOD is about how much a man can love his child. To that end, I feel like I could lift a car above my head to make my son smile. If he wanted that doll, yeah, I?d get him that doll. A: What inspired you to include a noir element to Fatherhood? R: I like noir. There?s something about that downward spiral that has always attracted me. I was writing noir years ago before I discovered noir or knew what it was, I?ve just always been a guy who likes to take his characters down into dark places. As for bringing it to this tale specifically, besides the awesome twitter game that brought forth the tale, it kind of just felt right matched against the futility of parenthood, which is by definition a quest to pull someone as close as can be possibly attained in the hopes that they will learn how to set themselves free. A: Why did you decide to create a comic? R: Because I love comics. Most of my ideas formulate into comics. I like writing other media but comics will always feel like my home. I love the structure, the collaborative nature. I could have tried this story as a prose short but the turn in the tale wouldn?t have worked half as well. This story needed images. A: What are you working on right now?? R: I?m busy writing my ongoing book from Action Lab Entertainment?s Danger Zone imprint called GHOST TOWN. It?s a semi-futuristic action thriller with a lot of heart. I?m nearing that beautiful crest on the finish line for a script of an issue that won?t see fans by 2014, for sure. Other than that, I have maybe five comic pitches in various forms alive in my project wheelhouse right now. I?ve finally getting my book of essays about Daredevil (I wrote some and edited the others) called THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS: EXAMINING MATT MURDOCK AND DAREDEVIL coming out from Sequart this year and debuting at my table at ECCC at the start of March (Table G-01 with Paul Allor). I?ve got a few comic anthology shorts at various stages of completion, I?ve got another project with FATHERHOOD artist extraordinaire Daniel Schneider lined up, and I?m also trying to fit in as much TV watching and comic reading as I can before my second child is born. A: What was the first comic book you remember reading? R: This one is hard to pin down because my house always had comics in it. It could have been any one of my flings with a Claremont X-MEN issue, or a WHAT IF? with Throg on the cover, but the comic that really first won me over and became my date was a reprint of VAULT OF HORROR #1 my brother bought me off the racks. That book turned my world upside down. A: What comic books do you read now? R: Let?s list a few active ongoings I?m digging right now: BATMAN, THE MASSIVE, BLOODSHOT, JUDGE DREDD, DAREDEVIL, SAGA, THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, THE ACTIVITY, MY LITTLE PONY, THOR GOD OF THUNDER, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, LOCKE & KEY, AMERICAN VAMPIRE? I hate doing these lists as I?m sure I?m missing a few I adore and they?ll come back to me the minute you post this, ha. A: Where do you want to take your comics in the future? R: I want my books to find enthusiastic fans. I can think of nothing better than to have someone read something I wrote and to find enjoyment. I want people in love with something I wrote. But, that?s like the pinnacle of what I?m after. For now, people can just quietly nod appreciatively, haha. A: Take me through the process of creating Fatherhood! R: It started on my iPad. I wrote up the story in page breakdowns and was very pleased when it equalled 22. That was synergy right from the start. I then started scripting it on my iPad which is unusual for me because I nearly always have to script on my computer. The iPad is for notes only, but this time I had the script on there and that meant I took it with me everywhere. I tooled the script up any chance I got. If there was a five minute wait, I busted out FATHERHOOD. If I was bored, I got the script out. This kept it fresh in the brain and meant it didn?t actually take long to write. Well, the first draft didn?t. I went through a number of drafts, as I normally do, and in that process I sent the script to some critical friends who I can trust to call me on any self-indulgent garbage. Once the script was tight, I approached Daniel ? we had been talking about something else but I really wanted him on this story ? and he jumped in artistic hands first. From there, it?s the usual tango of thumbnails, pencils, inks, colours, letters, and me hovering the whole time like an overprotective parent trying to ensure everything is perfect. And with my creative team, it always was. A: What have you learnt through creating Fatherhood? Having an amazing creative team is the absolute best. Daniel on art, Paulina Ganucheau on colours, Brandon DeStefano on letters, and Christopher Kosek on design. That?s the posse I rode with to make this beast and they were the best. There?s something about having a whole team click that just makes it all worthwhile. It?s a journey making comics, and a long one, so you need to pack in with only the best. A: Describe Fatherhood in three words! A: Who is your favourite family in comics? R: Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick. Purely because they have kids together and they also work their ass off and they manage to produce great content that has heart and reflects themselves as people. I?d love to get to that level some day. A: What do you hope to bring to the comics world? R: Another bearded writer. No, wait, that?s terrible, how about, a killer Australian accent? No, I got it; heart. I want to bring heart to the pages I write. That?s what I?m interested in reading so it?s what I want to deliver, some good old fashioned heart. There?s plenty of it in comics already so I?d be honoured to add some on top, you can never have too much. A: What are the benefits of creating independently? R: Absolute creative control. Only working with people as passionate as yourself ? or else why would they be there? The ability to completely shape a project in house and make it just so to your satisfaction. A: What are the disadvantages of creating independently? R: Minimum income, maximum expense. I don?t expect to make money on this book. In fact, it?s pretty much a flat out certainty I?ll lose money on it. I?ll also be lucky if the readership for this book ever reaches 3 digits. But that?s not the point of the venture. The point is to enjoy doing it. I love comics, I love making them, and so I wouldn?t change a thing about making FATHERHOOD. I?d love to have a publisher foot the printing cost, and organise distribution to thousands of retailers across the world, but I?m fine with doing this thing with my sleeves rolled up. This is where you start and it?s perfect because to pass this test you have to love it. If you?re looking to make indie comics for the ?phat money? and groupies then you are in the wrong place and always will be. You have to make this stuff for love of the game, and I have to admit that getting this out there into the world has been like a drug. It?s just amazing to see people having the opportunity to read something that was merely a thought in my head and on my iPad a few months ago. Oh, and I sometimes wished I had a ?manager? of some sort because I always feel like an ass emailing someone and asking what they are up to. I don?t want to feel like some overlord on the project but I was always so damned excited to see the next step in the progress that I couldn?t wait. When you run a book from start to finish you feel like you have to be checking up on things and then that makes you feel like the boss and that?s not how it works. I collaborated with my team and so I wasn?t barking orders or watching over shoulders, but I always felt like I was, so a ?manager? for my indie comic would be rad. It would make me spend less time procrastinating on email, that?s for sure. Ari, I also just wanted to say, thank you very much for taking the time to chat with me. It?s so hugely appreciated. I hope some of your readers get a chance to read FATHERHOOD, it should be available on www.readchallenger.com pretty soon, so stay tuned. Thanks for reading! You can find Ryan on Twitter here, and he's making an appearance at ECCC, so be sure to stop by and tell him I sent you!?

What's with Russia Buying Even More Gold?

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013
By Michael Lombardi, MBA for Profit Confidential

260213_PC_lombardiSkepticism toward gold bullion prices is increasing. The bears and the mainstream media are focused on the price decline of gold bullion and are clearly not looking at the demand of the metal. The reality: demand for gold bullion is increasing.

As gold bullion prices have declined a little since the beginning of 2013, purchases of gold by central banks have increased. In January, central banks from countries like Russia, Turkey, and Kazakhstan continued to buy more gold bullion.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Russian central bank increased its gold bullion holdings by 12.2 metric tons in January to 970 tons. During 2012, the Russian central bank increased its holdings by 8.5%. (Source: Bloomberg, February 25, 2013.) If Russia keeps its gold-buying pace throughout 2013 at the same level as January, it will increase its holdings of gold bullion by 15% during the year.

Similarly, the central bank of Kazakhstan increased its gold bullion holdings by 1.5 tons in January, bringing its total holdings to 116.8 tons. Over 2012, Kazakhstan?s central bank increased its holdings of gold bullion by 41%.

Turkey?s central bank increased its gold bullion holdings by 84% in 2012. In January, the bank bought another 10.3 tons of the precious metal.

Keep in mind that these are not the only central banks buying gold bullion. As the list of central banks printing more money has increased, the number of gold bullion purchasers has grown.

Demand for gold bullion in India, which is the world?s biggest buyer, remains high. As the World Gold Council cites, gold bullion imports in India increased 62% in the fourth quarter of 2012 to 255 tonnes. About 80% of India?s current account deficit (exports minus imports) is due to imports of gold bullion. (Source: The National, February 22, 2013.) To curb the demand, there are fears that the government of India might increase its import taxes on the gold bullion for the second time this year.

With all this demand for gold still present, what still holds true is that the supply for gold bullion hasn?t increased, while central banks around the world and consumers alike are running to buy the precious metal.

According to National Bank Financial, gold production is going to fall off a cliff in 2017. The main reasons: there hasn?t been any major discovery of the precious metal, and miners are delaying or cancelling projects due to increasing costs. (Source: Financial Post, February 5, 2013.)

Gold bullion, as I have repeatedly said in these pages, looks to be in a shiny spot. The current correction in gold prices we are experiencing is very normal in any long-term bull market. I continue to be bullish on gold bullion, because I still see increased demand by central banks and declining long-term supply. Until this imbalance of demand to supply changes, I expect gold bullion prices to outperform. (Also see ?Gold?s Price Correction: Separating the Men from the Boys.?)

Blackhawks' streak at 19 after OT win over Oilers

CHICAGO (AP) ? Marian Hossa skated along the boards, pumping his right arm as the United Center roared its approval.

Go ahead and give two more points to the streaking Chicago Blackhawks.

Hossa scored 1:44 into overtime and the Blackhawks beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Monday night to stretch their NHL-record opening points streak to 19 games.

Patrick Sharp set up the winning goal with a quick turn along the boards and a drive to the goal that led to two stops by Nikolai Khabibulin. Hossa picked up the second rebound and was again stuffed by Khabibulin before he poked it in for his ninth goal of the season.

"It is a great feeling, obviously," Hossa said. "It doesn't matter who's scoring and lately we have a lot of different guys scoring. We try to enjoy the streak, keep playing a simple game and try to find a way to win."

Patrick Kane and Viktor Stalberg also scored for Chicago (16-0-3), which has won six straight and nine of 10. Ray Emery made 17 saves to remain unbeaten in eight starts this season.

The Blackhawks have earned 35 of 38 possible points so far this season.

"It was a great third period," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "We had the puck in overtime, too. Great pay by Sharpie going to the net, great patience and presence with Hossa to finish."

Nail Yakupov and Jeff Petry had the goals for Edmonton, which carried a 2-1 lead into the third period but couldn't hold on for its fourth consecutive victory over the Blackhawks. Khabibulin had 31 stops in the opener of the Oilers' franchise-record, nine-game road trip.

"Of course you feel pain, having the lead going into the third period," Edmonton coach Ralph Krueger said. "It's definitely something you dream and believe you can close it. But they are an amazingly powerful team. They are very strong on the puck and they never, never let up, at all."

Edmonton grabbed the lead for the last time in the second, taking advantage when Brandon Saad was sent off for high sticking. Yakupov, the No. 1 overall pick in last year's draft, one-timed a pass from Sam Gagner into the right side of the net at 14:17 for his fourth power-play goal and sixth overall.

Chicago looked listless for much of the second, but rebounded quickly in the third. Michal Rozsival was behind the net when he sent a pass in front to Stalberg, who poked the puck into the mouth of goal as Khabibulin went to his knees to try for the stop.

The call on the ice was no goal, but replays showed the puck crossed the line before Khabibulin could make the play and Stalberg was awarded his fifth goal of the season after a short review.

The pace picked up after the tying goal, and each team had a couple of solid chances to move in front. Yakupov shot off the post on one power-play opportunity, and Khabibulin stopped Hossa on a short-handed chance.

"I think for us it would have been a big statement game if we were able to break the streak," Gagner said. "But at the same time, once we didn't do that, we wanted to find a way to get it in overtime and were unable to do that as well. So it was unfortunate we kind of squandered the lead there."

Edmonton moved in front in the first period after Duncan Keith lost his footing and coughed up the puck deep in Chicago's end. Lennart Petrell picked it up and skated in all alone on Emery, who stopped his backhand attempt. The rebound went out to Petry, who sent it over the prone goalie at 4:28.

Just over a minute later, Kane skated to the middle of the ice and beat Khabibulin with a slick backhander for his 10th goal of the season. It was his first goal since Feb. 10 at Nashville, ending a six-game drought.

"We keep finding ways to win," said Sharp, who picked up his 400th career point on the assist in overtime. "That's important at any time of the year. Those one-goal games, we're on the right side of them. We were thankful to pull it out today."

NOTES: Chicago closed out a 6-0-1 homestand. ... Edmonton F Taylor Hall served the second of a two-game suspension for his hit on Minnesota's Cal Clutterbuck on Thursday. ... Blackhawks C Dave Bolland missed his second straight game with an upper-body injury. Chicago also scratched D Sheldon Brookbank and LW Brandon Bollig for the second straight night. ... Ds Ryan Whitney and Theo Peckham were the other scratches for the Oilers. ... The Blackhawks improved to 10-0-3 in one-goal games.

Researchers explore PKC role in lung disease

A JGP study examines the role of PKC in airway smooth muscle contraction and raises the possibility that this enzyme could be a therapeutic target for treating asthma, COPD, and other lung diseases. The diagram shown summarizes the pathways regulating airway smooth muscle contraction. Credit: Dixon, R.E., and L.F. Santana. 2013. J. Gen. Physiol. appear in The Journal of General Physiology, provide new insight into the mechanisms involved in regulating luminal diameter of small airways and reveal PKC as a potential target for drug therapies.

The researchers used phase-contrast video microscopy, confocal microscopy, Western blot analysis, and pharmacological activators and inhibitors to investigate the role of PKC in airway SMC contraction in mouse lung slices. Their results suggest that activation of PKC in small airways promotes an influx of calcium into SMC and subsequent intracellular release of calcium ions to generate low frequency SMC twitching. PKC activation also induces a strong calcium ion sensitization of contraction, eliciting a stronger contractile response to stimuli that increase free intracellular calcium. Consequently, PKC activation downstream of various molecules, such as thrombin, that are present in the airways in conjunction with inflammatory lung diseases, could sensitize the airway SMCs to contractile stimuli and contribute to the airway hyper responsiveness that is characteristic of asthma and COPD.

Cleric resigns after allegations of 'inappropriate' conduct with priests

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's most senior Roman Catholic cleric resigned on Monday following allegations he behaved in an inappropriate way with priests, and said he would not take part in the election of Pope Benedict's replacement.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien said he had tendered his resignation some months ago, ahead of his 75th birthday in March and because he was suffering from "indifferent health".

The Vatican said the pope, who steps down on Thursday, had accepted O'Brien's resignation as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh.

O'Brien, an outspoken opponent of gay marriage, has been reported to the Vatican over allegations of inappropriate behavior stretching back 30 years, according to Britain's Observer newspaper.

The cardinal, who last week advocated allowing Catholic priests to marry as many found it difficult to cope with celibacy, rejected the allegations and was seeking legal advice, his spokesman said.1

"Looking back over my years of ministry: For any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologize to all whom I have offended," O'Brien said in a statement, which made no reference to the recent allegations.

He said he would not attend the election next month of a new pope, saying: "I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me - but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor."

The Observer, which gave little detail on the claims, said three priests and a former priest, from a Scottish diocese, had complained over incidents dating back to 1980.

One said the cardinal formed an "inappropriate relationship" with him while another complained of unwanted behavior by O'Brien after a late-night drinking session.

Last year, O'Brien's comments labeling gay marriage a "grotesque subversion" landed him with a "Bigot of the Year" award from British gay rights group Stonewall.

Samsung's Galaxy S IV: Everything we know so far

Circle your calendars for March 14, Android fans

The Galaxy S III is the best-selling Android smartphone ever. So it was awfully big news on Monday when Samsung announced a special press event on March 14 to announce what's probably going to be the Galaxy S IV. Will the new Galaxy tout an even bigger screen? Will nifty new hardware upgrades lead to the iPhone 5's obsolescence? (Kidding.) Here's everything we know about Samsung's next flagship phone:

1. It'll be announced in the U.S. first
Last year, Samsung announced the Galaxy S III in London, but this time, the company's pulling the curtains off in New York City as confirmed at the Mobile World Congress tech show in Barcelona, Spain. Then the company sent this tweet:

March 14. Ready 4 the show? #UNPACKED twitter.com/SamsungMobile/?

SEE MORE: Michelle Obama: Does the first lady belong at the Oscars?

? Samsung Mobile (@SamsungMobile) February 25, 2013

Why New York??"We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year, and this time we changed the venue (to New York) ... as we were bombarded with requests from U.S. mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country," said J.K. Shin, the head of Samsung Mobile.

2. Its screen probably won't be "unbreakable"
Before the Consumer Electronics Show, a few tech blogs reported that the S IV would be the first handset to use flexible AMOLED screens ? a really tough, malleable material that makes a display virtually?crack-proof. Unfortunately, it looks like that's no longer the case, and the screen will be similar to the ones we're used to. "Flexible screens are still a while off," one source told The Verge.?So what will its next-gen display look like? It's expected to have a higher resolution, at?1080p. And according to some sources, it may even see a slight size bump to 4.99 inches.

SEE MORE: How much will the sequester hurt?

3. It might have a swanky new camera
The S IV will reportedly use Samsung's new Orb technology, which allows users to better capture 360-degree snapshots. Essentially, the camera will automatically compress big, landscape photographs for an easier time uploading to sites like Facebook. A few days ago, unnamed users apparently testing the S IV's cameras uploaded some photos to Google+. (The shots have since been deleted.)?EXIF data revealed large pixel resolutions at 4128 x 2322 (9.6 megapixels), which, based on its 16:9 aspect ratio, seems to suggest that the Galaxy S IV will be a 13-megapixel shooter.

4. It'll be pretty fast
Here's a quick rundown of the purported specs, according to a leaked spec sheet:
? Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
? 1.9GHz Qualcom Snapdragon 600 processor
? 2GB RAM
? 16/32/64GB storage options
? Removable SD card slot (up to 64GB)
? 13MP rear-facing camera
? 4G LTE support
? Multi-purpose / Dedicated camera button
? Bluetooth 5.0
? 3100 mAh battery

5. It might have touch-less touch
The Galaxy Note II has a new feature called Air View that allowed users to begin new actions by hovering over something with their S Pen stylus. Here's what it looks like:

According to a few tech blogs, the S IV is rumored to employ similar technology for a "floating" touch feature, which would introduce a new dimension to all the typical pinches and swipes. ?

Chinese company reveals 'fastest smartphone in the world'

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Huawei, a Chinese company that recently became the world's third-largest maker of smartphones, calls its new flagship product "the fastest smartphone in the world" and wants to use it to expand global awareness of its brand.

Parts of the presentation of the phone at a press conference Sunday in Barcelona, Spain, suggest that the company has some way to go in polishing its pitch for a global audience.

Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer business group said the new phone can be programmed to display more than 100 different "themes," or looks. This is important because "ladies like flowers, colorful things," Yu said.

Yu also said Huawei is learning from Apple how to make Google's Android software easier to use, a lawsuit-friendly utterance considering that Apple is on a global campaign to sue makers of Android phones for copying from the iPhone.

The new phone, the Ascend P2, will have a 4.7 inch screen. Yu said it will be available in the April to June time frame for about $525 without a contract. It's the "fastest" because it supports faster download speeds than other phones. However, today's wireless networks aren't equipped to supply those speeds.

Huawei Technologies Ltd. was the world's third largest seller of smartphones, after Samsung and Apple, in the fourth quarter of last year, according to research firm IDC. That's despite selling very few phones in the U.S., where the big phone companies mostly ignore it. It has a much better position in Europe, where cellphone companies have embraced its network equipment, and France's Orange is committed to selling the phone.

In the U.S., a congressional panel recommended in October that phone carriers avoid doing business with Huawei or its smaller Chinese rival, ZTE Corp., for fear that its network equipment could contain "back doors" that enable access to communications from outside. The Chinese government rejected the report as false and an effort to block Chinese companies from the U.S. market.

Meanwhile, a report by a private U.S. cybersecurity firm concluded recently that a special unit of China's military is responsible for sustained cyberespionage against U.S. companies and government agencies. China has denied involvement in the attacks in which massive amounts of data and corporate trade secrets, likely worth hundreds of millions of dollars, were stolen.

"It has not been an easy journey for us," Huawei's global brand director, Amy Lou, said Sunday of the company's quest to become globally recognized and trusted. She called the company "a great consumer brand in the making."

The world's largest cellphone trade show, Mobile World Congress, opens Monday in Barcelona.

Patriots in Turkey send clear warning to Syria: Germany

KAHRAMANMARAS, Turkey (Reuters) - Germany's defense minister inspected Patriot missile batteries close to the Syria-Turkey border on Saturday and said they delivered a "clear warning" to Damascus that NATO would not tolerate missiles being fired into Turkey.

Thomas de Maiziere and his Dutch counterpart Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert travelled to the Turkish cities of Adana and Kahramanmaras to inspect the batteries provided by their countries at Turkey's request. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was scheduled to visit the same area on Sunday when she begins a two-day visit to Turkey.

The United States has also sent Patriots, which are capable of shooting down hostile missiles in mid-air.

"Our presence here serves to make sure that Syria doesn't turn its capabilities into action," de Maiziere said, while also saying that the risk of attack was "minimal".

"We can see from here that Syria is using rockets - often several times a day."

Syria is believed to have more than 1,000 rockets with a range of up to 700 km, and around 1,000 tons of chemical weapons material.

Turkey is a staunch supporter of the nearly two-year uprising against President Bashar al-Assad and has harbored both Syrian refugees and rebels. Violence has sometimes spilled over the border.

Tensions increased in recent weeks after NATO said it had detected launches of short-range ballistic missiles inside Syria, several of which have landed close to the Turkish border. Turkey has scrambled war planes along the frontier, fanning fears the war could spread and further destabilize the region.

"The Patriot system is strictly for defense, and placing them on our soil within the NATO framework was to protect our people and our soil against possible attack," said Turkish Defence Minister Ismet Yilmaz, travelling with his Dutch and German counterparts.

Merkel backs new EU talks for Turkey but has doubts

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday she favored new talks to revive Turkey's stalled European Union membership bid, following warnings by the Turkish prime minister its half-century wait was "unforgivable".

Yet Merkel, who favors a "privileged partnership" for Turkey in place of full EU membership, stressed the outcome of Ankara's talks with Brussels should be open, and she remained skeptical about whether Turkey should join.

Turkey has complained bitterly over Berlin's lack of support for its EU hopes, and has accused the EU of double-standards in conducting negotiations without full membership in mind.

Merkel made her comments in her regular weekly video message, a day before she sets off on a two-day visit to Turkey. Her defense minister visited German patriot missile batteries in Turkey, a fellow NATO member, on Saturday.

Socialist French President Francois Hollande said last week he was ready to unblock talks on the "chapter" or policy area dealing with help for EU regions. His conservative predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, strongly opposed Turkey's EU aspirations.

"I think a long negotiating path lies ahead of us. Although I am skeptical, I agreed with the continuation of membership discussions. We are engaging in these with an open result," Merkel said.

"In recent times, negotiations stalled somewhat and I am in favor of opening a new chapter in order to move forward."

Turkey's EU accession bid, launched in 2005, all but ground to a halt over an intractable dispute over the divided island of Cyprus, an EU member, and opposition from Paris and Berlin.

Turkey has completed only one of 35 policy "chapters" every accession candidate must conclude. All but 13 are blocked by France, Cyprus and the European Commission, which says Ankara does not meet standards on human rights and freedom of speech.

"Since Mrs Merkel came to office, she has repeatedly used the expression 'privileged partnership' about our European Union process. Yet when Germany had the rotating presidency, we were still able to secure the opening of certain chapters," Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul.

He expressed his hope for positive developments during Ireland's EU presidency which runs until July. Germany last held it in the first half of 2007.

"Now there is change in France and a difference in the views of Germany and France. Along with Chancellor Merkel's positive statement on opening chapters, these will pay off during Ireland's presidency," Erdogan added.

GROWING PRESSURE

Turkey is increasingly frustrated at the wait and support among its citizens for joining the EU has waned. Erdogan called the delay "unforgivable" on February 4 and has warned the EU would lose Turkey if it was not granted full membership by 2023.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, from Merkel's Free Democrat (FDP) coalition partners called the standstill unsatisfactory in December and urged renewed vigor in talks.

Even some within Merkel's own Christian Democrats back fuller support for Turkey, risking the chancellor becoming more isolated in advocating 'privileged partnership'.

EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger, a CDU member, told newspaper Bild this week, "I'd like to bet that within the next decade, a German chancellor along with their colleagues from France will go begging on their knees to Ankara saying 'friends come to us'".

Ruprecht Polenz, head of the CDU's parliamentary foreign affairs committee, told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper on Saturday: "it is clear to most people in my party that the idea of 'privileged partnership' is defunct." Instead people should accept that negotiations will ultimately lead to membership.

In historic UFC bout, Rousey and Carmouche score one for female athletes everywhere

ANAHEIM, Calif. ? Nothing was more predictable, nor nearly as significant, as Ronda Rousey's arm bar victory over Liz Carmouche in the first round of their bantamweight title fight on Saturday.

The fight marked a monumental moment in sports history, a time when the women stood above the men in every way. Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche jostle for position Saturday. (USA Today Sports)

For one, Rousey and Carmouche saved UFC 157 after a stinker of a co-main event between Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson. When the Rousey-Carmouche fight was announced as the main event in December, a small but very vocal portion of the UFC fan base howled in protest.

Of course, they simply showed themselves as clueless bigots because there was no doubt who everybody had come to see Saturday.

All 15,525 fans who jammed the Honda Center and paid a $1.4 million gate were there to see if Rousey could stretch her incredible run of first-round arm bars to 10 in 10 amateur and professional fights.

When Machida won a sleep-inducing split decision in the co-main event, Rousey and Carmouche went out and put on a dynamic show that brought down the house. Rousey got a hero's welcome from the crowd from the moment she entered the arena. It hit a crescendo as she stepped into the cage, men and women, boys and girls, standing and screaming for her in a full-throated roar.

The reception made those who had angrily said they wouldn't buy a ticket or watch the show because the UFC was somehow disrespecting Machida and Henderson look awfully small.

"Imagine how this place would have been had [Machida-Henderson] been the main event," UFC president Dana White said. "Everyone would have left here [angry] and it would have ruined the show."

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Rousey and Carmouche also carried the show on the promotional end. White said early estimates are that the results will be far higher than anticipated, squelching concerns in some corners that it might flop.

They were witty, colorful and passionate in telling their stories and the public bought in.

This was a moment comparable to the 1973 Battle of the Sexes tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. That match squashed the outdated notion that women were somehow a weaker sex and couldn't compete with men.?

King-Riggs was an exhibition though; Rousey-Carmouche was very much the real deal.

They proved that women could compete on a show featuring men and still be the star attractions. Too often, women's sports are given secondary roles.

The majority of television, print and online coverage of sports is about men. This might be the night that nudges the pendulum closer to the center.

Rousey and Carmouche competed on a card filled with men and looked perfectly at home in the main event.

[Also: Lyoto Machida ekes out split decision win over frustrated Dan Henderson]

The pressure on Rousey was enormous. She carried an unprecedented promotional load, for months filling every waking moment that she wasn't training with interviews.

Not only was there intense pressure on her to win, but it was specifically to win by first-round arm bar. Anything less would have been perceived as a disappointment.

She's ready to hide now after running on fumes for weeks.?Ronda Rousey celebrates after defeating Liz Carmouche. (USA Today Sports)

"For the next week, I'm probably going to fall totally off the grid as much as I can," she said, grinning. "If I see anyone, I'm not going to talk about me at all. No more talking about me for a whole week."

Others, though, will be talking about her for a long time after Saturday's win. She survived a near-submission when Carmouche hopped onto her back early and first caught her in a rear naked choke and then a neck crank.

It looked for a time that Rousey's unbeaten streak would end and that the former Marine, the first openly gay fighter in the UFC, would wrest the title from her.

Carmouche knew that Rousey wouldn't go quietly, and she didn't.

"Neck cranks are hard to pull off and if the person has a lot of heart, she can fight through it, which she did," Carmouche said of Rousey.

Carmouche had Rousey's teeth marks on her arm after, the result of knocking Rousey's mouthpiece out and Rousey's upper teeth coming down on her forearm.

When the news conference ended, Rousey walked over to Carmouche and said, "Sorry, dude. Definitely not intentional," and the two combatants embraced. Both were beaming, and though Carmouche had come up a loser in her biggest fight, it seemed appropriate.

They'd accomplished something together that was far bigger than themselves, and Rousey clearly pulled alongside fighters such as Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva as one of the UFC's biggest draws.

"Ronda is a big star, man, and people want to see her," White said afterward.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss to resurgent Robbie Lawler]

The duo did much more, though, for women who have been denied opportunity or not given equal access solely because of their gender. They stood up to the scrutiny and the grind and the pressure and delivered a scintillating performance. Ronda Rousey goes for an arm bar against Liz Carmouche. (Getty)

"I thought it was a great fight and I thought it lived up to all of the hype around it, the fact the place was going nuts," Rousey said. "I'm glad it was a full house. I'm honored to be part of it. It might take a while to sink in."

The ramifications of Saturday's show are potentially significant, not only for MMA but women's sports. A day after Rousey and Carmouche put on a show, Danica Patrick will start on the pole in the Daytona 500.

It's a new world and Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche played a significant role in shaping it.
