Feeding Cat

Many cat owners are unaware about the unhealthy components that make up the daily diet?of their pet cats. Generally, this inappropriate food can ultimately lead to healthy issues at a later point in their lives.

Here are some of the more common feeding mistakes that can be detrimental to the health of your cat:

Feeding your cat only dry kibble ? feeding only dry kibble can be convenient for owners, but according to Lisa Pierson, DVM, an expert in feline nutrition and creator of CatInfo.org, a cat?s thirst is much more subdued than a dog?s. They usually don?t feel like drinking water and their urine is highly concentrated. If a cat?s diet contains very little liquid, it often leads to urinary tract infection. It is recommended that cats are given moist canned food, which generally has 78% water, to keep them hydrated.

Feeding your cat too much food ? probably the most common mistake cat owners make is feeding the cat too much food which leads to obesity. ?Obesity is the most common nutritional disease seen in cats?, says Joe Bartges, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DACVN, professor of medicine and nutrition, the Acree Endowed Chair of Small Animal Research in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee.

Cat obesity is often associated with arthritis and diabetes, and urinary tract disease. To determine how much food your cat needs, the recommended amount is between 24-35 calories/day for each pound to keep your cat healthy and maintain its average weight.

Adding garlic supplement to combat tapeworms ? some of you may have noticed wiggly creatures at your cat?s posterior that resemble squirming rice. If you notice this in your cat, it means your cat has tapeworms in its small intestine. Many believe that the best cure for it is to add garlic to the cat?s food. According to Bartges, ?this is one of the biggest misconceptions around. There is no proof that garlic prevents any parasitic infestation, including intestinal worms or fleas.? In fact, too much garlic can damage your cat?s red blood cells.

Making your cat a vegan or vegetarian ? many vegetarian and vegan cat owners are trying to fashion their pet cat?s diet with their own diet, thinking it would be healthier for the cat. Cats are obligate carnivores and they thrive on a high protein diet from meat and body organs. One of the vital nutrients needed by cats is the amino acid taurine, which is found in animal tissue. Taurine deficiency in cats can cause blindness, heart problems, and possibly death.
